Diabetes and Me
The Discovery.

The year 2000 was a fateful year for me. I discovered that I had diabetes. It began sometime in July when I suddenly felt very dehydrated and had to drink water every half and hour. I used to be able to go the whole day without a drink. I also had to go to the toilet more often. On the advice of my wife I went for a check up. The doctor took my blood to do a blood-suger count and told me that if the reading was above 9.5 then I was diabetic. When the reading appeared he nearly fell off his chair as it showed 22.0. He said I should have felt very sick. He prescribed Metformin, gave me a sheet of instructions on what to eat and said to come back in two weeks for another blood test. This hit me like a ton of bricks. Diabetes!! No more Suger!!! No more Alcohol!!! No more Life!!!!! It was going to be slow climb back to health. At least that is what I thought.

Fast Climb up a Slow Hill.

I have always relied on books for information so now it was off to the book shop. I found very good books on diabetes and the next stop was the internet where I fould so many sites that could help and educate me. Things were getting brighter. I very soon dicovered a few new truths. You can live very well with diabetes. It actually made me a healthier person. I discovered that I could take wine or beer etc in moderation as long as I fitted it into my eating plan and it became fun to experiment with diets and make eating lists. So take heart.
I was back to normal soon achieving an acceptable weight of 65 kg - a lost of about 10 kgs. My blood-suger level fell to 7.5 after the two weeks and now it has remained between 5.0 and 8.0 faithfully.

The Lesson.

The lesson I learn't from this is that you have to become RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN LIFE. Your health is in your hands and you may have to make sacrifices to obtain this. I gave up eating meats, took up eating vegetables and reduced my alcohol intake considerably. It was worth it all. I have not been healthier or happier as now. Thanks to Diabetes. I may live longer because of it.

Your Life is Yours
Take Responsiblity for it Now
You are the only one that can make Change
